Description: Moldova, like all former USSR republics, has vodka....but is better known for its wine. The cardboard box alone is worth getting. Has the flags/emblems of all former Soviet republics, done on a red foil-like background. Shows a bit of "nostalgia" for the former USSR. But is the vodka any good? I would definitely have to say yes. Not to mention it is an exceptionally good value.....priced---at least in Washington---about $4-5 less than Stoli, Standard, etc. Yes, it is good, as in about 8 on a 10 scale. And reasonably priced. I would have to say, best "bang for your buck"! (Note: having problems with uploading picture; hopefully get the issue fixed soon....)

Description: I discovered this unique village inn while sailing the west coast of Scotland. With a Russian wife we have visited Russian restaurants in Paris, London and New York, but this place is in a totally different higher league. Run by a Russian family for 10 years, they reproduce fine Imperial Russian dishes authentically. Babushka researched the recipes and menus in the kitchen archives of Count Strogonov in St Petersburg. Daily she gathers from the wild salads, herbs, berries seaweed and fungi to produce the fine cuisine. Their own fisherman lands the live fish and seafood on the pier just outside the kitchen. It is reputed to be in the top five affordable restaurants in Scotland...not just Russian ones! We were so impressed that I have registered to share this information with yourselves. Their menus are on http://www.butehotel.com and by the way they have four inexpensive guestrooms. The views from the tavern are spectacular.

Description: Swiss airlines is now my preference to get to St Petersburg over Lufthansa. I have never had any hassles with service and they have always been on time and the aircraft clean. Meals have been ok if not great. I prefer the A330 over the A340-300 for the long haul back to the Middle East from Zurich because the legroom is greater. The one downside is a requirement for me to overnight in Zurich on the way back as a same day connection service is not possible in the direction I travel but that is a limitation not faced by many people. And I have friends there so for me it's just another stop on my holiday and I like the city of Zurich anyway. Highly recommended.

Description: This is a nice restaurant, quite fancy by Ukrainian standards. The restaurant is in an "old country" style building right in the middle of "Shevchenka" Park, on Taras Shevchenka blvd. about 2 blocks west of "Bessarabia square" There are 2 levels of seating, with an outdoor patio as well. They have mostly traditional Ukrainian food. When we were there they had some guys dressed in Cossack costumes performing swordfighting tricks, an amusing show for our dinner!

Description: Fiance.com is a marriage/introduction agency. It is very much a "big box" agency, with smaller agencies feeding profiles to it. They are not limited to FSU countries, and you can, in fact, search worldwide, in virtually all regions of the world. They do have many of the same features that most other agencies do---tours, mail forwarding, advertisments for men, search options etc.... Membership rates are similar to other comparable sites. Unlike most agencies, the last names are also shown in the profiles. They also will tell if the girls are with another agency, or if they are independent. I must compliment them on them "keeping it real" when it comes to photos. For the most part, it is "natural" photograpy. No real cheap looking photos, but more importantly, there is also a general absence of the glossy "model-type" shots. More than likely, what you get is much closer to what you see. There are some database problems, however. Occasionally, you will have a lady with more than one profile...not to mention other minor issues. Since I am new at looking at this site, I cannot say for myself how good this site works. So, the jury is still out, as far as I'm concerned. However, my friends that have used this, have said that they probably have the lowest rate of response to letters, of any dating/marriage site.

Themed on Crimean War and waitresses in naval apparel, it is great restaurant. English menus available. Wash hands just inside door. Indoor and outdoor dining. Outdoor is smoker friendly - too friendly. So much smoke ruined my appetite for the savory foods. I suggest sittng indoors. Food is incredibly rich and diverse choices of Ukrainian and Russian specialties. Every thing was superb. 4 courses with beer and tea - $12 per person.

Description: My Fiance and I stayed in this hotel for one night in July 2007. It was supposed to be for our wedding night but that is another story! The entrance to the hotel is quite small with the reception area on the left hand side as you enter. We paid for a night in the suite which carries the name of hotel - the Marco Polo - at a cost of 7500 Rubles. We originally wanted another suite but this had already been booked. The room was spectacular. Very lavishly furnished and the bed was great with the old four poster design and fabric strewn over them. My fiance loved it.. and if she was happy I was happy. Only a couple of minor issues. The Jaccuzi either had not been cleaned in a while or maybe just not used.. because when we turned it on there was an unpleasant odour and some "junk" in the water. Upon cleaning by service people it was fine. And one of the bathroom fittings did not work. One hint, if you pay for the room in advance like we did keep your receipt, they tried to charge us for the room twice. Needless to say, my fiance, a native of the city, was not impressed and did not mince words. (-: The only disadvantage of the suites is that you have to ascend either via the stairs (which was ok as they are wide) or via a small elevator which starts only on the NEXT level above the reception. So, either way your going to be lugging suitcases up at least one set of steps. We did not use the hotel car service for pickup having learnt from our previous experience with Grand Hotel Emerald. Instead we travelled using Taxi 6 000 000. That is literally their phone number in St petersburg. As far as taxis go they are by far the most economical. Finally, it may have been due to it being "paratrooper day" but we found there were large groups of drunks around in the evening which meant we didn't go too far with our evening walks.
